The Student as Tutorial Designer

Image
Tutorial design is a great way for students for students to master an idea or topic and to teach their peers a subject that they are confident in.  I think lessons in ELA, math, or science can be taught using tutorial design. In every class, there are students who understand or have mastery of different topics. In ELA, students can create a video of themselves discussing different pieces of the book. This could be a cause and effect explanation, a character comparison, etc. In math, students can teach their peers how to use certain equations. In doing this, students can work at the same pace as the student teaching and understand how to use the equation correctly. Science could be used in the same aspect. Students can perform a class experiment and show how they did it and how they got the sought for results. This can help the students in the same way by helping them understand the material better.  In relation to Daniel Pink's analysis of purpose, I think giving students a job to

My Example of a Mind Map and How I feel it is a Useful Classroom Tool

Image
I did an example of a mind map based on a horseback riding discipline I ride called dressage. You can see the different branches connected to it that form different ideas of the sport. This is form of note taking can be used for any subject. I learned that mind mapping is a great way for students to develop thoughts in a visual way. By doing this, students are able to see and keep track of their thoughts relating to a topic. I also learned that mind mapping also helps students with dyslexia or ASD. Using mind mapping rather than normal note taking can help students to better understand what they are learning and help them organize their thoughts and ideas in a way that makes sense to them. This is also more fun and engaging than normal note taking. Students can also use a mind map to help them brainstorm an idea. This can also be used as a collaborative project for students both online and with physical copies as well. Creating a mind map is easy and fun for students. The mind map is

The Role of Teachers in Digital Learning

Image
With most digital learning, students will be asked to do a larger task and make more of a class contribution. Because of this, students may be more inclined to do more. On the flip side, students may be more resistant to do more if they see it as unnecessary.  As an educator, I do expect to see some resistance from students when asking them to make more of a contribution. I would mostly expect this from the older students (5th-high school), but I can also see the younger students resisting as well. Some students get by doing the minimum and are happy with that. Others may enjoy doing more and creating a greater contribution to the class. There are some students who take pride in their hard work and look forward to doing something different to see how they can master the new technology. Parents could also swing one way or another; some parents may feel that students should not have to contribute more to the class learning or view that as the teacher's responsibility. Others may feel

My Review of Flipgrid

Image
Flipgrid is a digital learning tool that allows students and teachers to post their responses in video forms and then respond to one another using video. This would be a great application should schools go back to being online. Flipgrid also connects directly to Google Classroom, so it works well to have an assignment that can be directly linked to one platform to another. Flipgrid helps student collaborate like a discussion board, but with the use of video. The teachers can also respond to the students to provide support, comments or feedback on the post. Students could do projects like a book report using a video rather than an in-person presentation to tell their findings and then students can also respond to the students video presentation or ask questions via video or group discussions using Google Classroom. Students can better understand material using this application because they can ask and answer questions from one another or create the projects in a group and record as a

My Definition of Digital Learning and Why it is Important

Image
Digital learning is a tool for both teachers and students to use to enhance learning. Using digital learning, students can further engage in their learning by being able to research, explore, and even play interactive games to promote learning. In order for digital learning to be successful in the classroom, teachers must do more than give the students a laptop or an iPad. They must make sure they have content to be taught utilizing the technology. An example of digital learning in the classroom is Epic Learning. When students use Epic, they are able to read books that are at an appropriate level for them as readers. This way, they are not reading books that are too easy, nor are they reading books that are too difficult for them. Digital learning, when used correctly, can be a very important tool to teachers and education as a whole. With continuous improvements being made in technology, teachers can use technology and digital learning to promote learning across the classroom at the v

My Introduction

Image
Hi there! My name is Kelly and I am a current student as St. Andrews university. I live off campus in a small town about 20 minutes from the school. I am a double major in special education and therapeutic horsemanship. My professional goals are to graduate, begin working in a school (elementary preferred), and then also have a space to teach both therapeutic horsemanship lessons as well as regular riding lessons. I am more of a visual learner, though I do learn better and get more achieved with the help of music. This blog is being created for my EDU 311 course, Digital Learning Applications. In this course I intend to be successful by staying on track, asking questions when I get confused, and using resources provided (handouts, textbooks, etc.) or researching when I need the extra help.  Outside of academics, I am not really an interesting person, but I work 2 jobs and ride 4-6 horses a week. I am a student tutor or Scotland County Schools as well as a server, hostess and assistant
